Photoshop tutorial - Post processing: Toning black and white images
Read more post-processing tutorials here.
This easy post-processing tutorial shows how to tone black and white images to give them an art approach. It can turn a rather boring image into something interesting.
It is best used for cityscapes, objects and still life.
Before & After

1- Convert your image to black and white (Image > Adjustments > Desaturate)
2- Insert a Color balance adjustment layer
First tone the hilights to your preferences.

Then the shadows.

Finally adjust the midtones slightly.
Preserve Luminosity tends to increase considerably the contrast and shadows, therefore I avoid it.
Some examples of black and white toning can be seen on my photoblog Lightfocus.org.
