New technologies or shooting crazy?

The excitement around new technologies often acts as a shield for software makers to not have to fix their current shit.

It’s literally poops me that Adobe keeps creating more languages and extensions, new technologies, and yet, the IDE of Flash is still so shocking!

Some technologies, such as Director, seems to be floating in the AIR (no pun intended), with no clear future path.

If you want a viable growth for your potential evangelists/users, I think it’s time to give them some love, and not pull them apart, making them dive into new options, new exciting things… To what purpose anyway? Make the blogosphere go crazy?

I understand that these days, if you don’t lead in technology, you’re in the shade. That said, it’s possible to sustain a comfortable advance in the tech world and maintain a reasonable support for the existing technologies.

These are exciting days, yes, but Adobe has a responsibility to build a sustainable growth, and stop shooting in every possible directions.

I think Adobe is doing some preemptive strikes against Microsoft. By expanding Flash in all directions, they hope the technology will become so entrenched in all areas, that it’ll be impossible to replace (think PDF).

Director is being pushed aside… they don’t want to say it out loud so that the existing (remaining) Director developers don’t get pissed. Despite its features, Director is obsolete. Nowadays you can do the same thing with Flash and a third-party tool such as Zinc. Director was conceived in the days of ‘CD-ROM demos’ and it’s totally unfit for online content.

As for the Flash IDE, yes, it’s a shame. But it’s also part of their strategy - they are separating the products: Flash for design, Flex for programming. Obviously you may need both, so you’ll pay extra. If you have used Premiere and After Effects, you’ll notice that they are complementary products; except for very simple stuff, you’ll need both of them. They could have integrated both products into an ‘After Premiere’ but they prefer to make you buy more…

Damn right.

But it still necessary to open eyes to new technologies, they will change some workflows after several months, a year, and you could know their developers wouldn’t have time to improve something as you wish.

I don’t think Flash and Flex should be separated as design/programming. Flex is not everything for Flash platform programming, it suitable for data-driven, service-oriented applications, but not for optimization, and games. The Flex framework is a double-edged sword, Flex designers have to work with screen by screen, state by state for developers.
