I’m sorry, but Flash CS3 Sucks.
The only noticeable difference between flash8 and flash9 is the pretty boxes wrapping around the interface and the support for AS3. Ok, granted, compiler errors are a tiny bit more useful than before. Oh, and it’s finally universal for Mac (meaning it doesn’t crash every 10min).
No offence, I love AS3, and I love flex builder 2. I just have a problem with the wacky Flash interface that has been going on since the beginning.
The help is basically the same than Flex builder 2 when it comes to AS3, however the search is still half-assed and that’s just hopeless.
I end up developing the AS3 classes in Flex Builder and made a Quicksilver shortcut to publish the Flash file. That’s my only way around it.
Let’s take three examples:
- Flash doesn’t do proper auto-completion when it comes from other classes, it gives the 50 or so possibilities and up to you to go through them with a nasty little left and right arrow. If you happen to type certain characters, it will remove the contextual (non helping) help and leave you alone…
- Flash doesn’t automatically add the ‘import’ line required if you start using a class such as MovieClip. Flex Builder does. I thought it rocks from day 1. I would have expected that from Flash.
- Flash doesn’t have any sort of class generation or snippet to start with. In flex builder, when you create an actionscript class, you’re given the basic package{class… }. Flash? Nada. You’re left with textexpander.
Do they want us to develop AS3 in anything but Flash? Seriously?!
Flash has again been half-assed product and we’re AGAIN looking forward to the next upgrade. Or shall I say, patch.
